5 Top Tips for Buying Children’s Beds
Buying any piece of furniture is an important decision, especially when you are deciding to buy children’s beds. Children’s beds come in all sorts of different materials and finishes and there are many types to choose from.
Here are five top tips for buying children’s beds:
1. Choose the right bed for your child.
You want the best for your child, so take into account the comfort and safety of the bed you choose, as well as the cost. If your child is old enough, then talk about the options available with them. A boy may want something different to a girl, so getting their feedback is always helpful and useful. Show some pictures from a catalogue or carry out a search online. Remember that the most expensive bed is not necessarily the best choice for your child; there is no point in spending a lot of money on something they do not like.
2. Check the dimensions.
Check that your preferred bed will fit into the space you have set aside for it, especially if you are buying one that is bigger than the one it is replacing. You need to know the length and width first, and if it is a bunk or cabin bed then check out the height as well. If the room it is going into has a low ceiling then bunk or cabin beds may not be best suited.
3. Decide on the materials.
Take into account the type of material the bed is made out of, and the extent to which it suits the room it is going into. Think also about whether it matches, or needs to match, any other furniture in that room. If, for example, there is a pine theme to the room, then it makes sense to buy a pine, or pine effect, bed. If the room is minimalist then a metal frame might be more appropriate, or for a room with lots of bright colours you might want to consider something in vibrant shaped plastic.
4. Think about storage.
Beds take up space and a child’s room is often not the tidiest of places. If you are looking for additional storage space then certain types of bed will give you that (or you can always store things under a standard type of bed). Think about a captain’s bed or a cabin bed if you do want some added storage capacity, particularly if extra drawers or cupboards would be useful.
5. Make the bedroom a fun place to be.
Do not underestimate the importance of the bedroom to your child. It is not just a place for sleeping, but for playing in or retreating to when things get a bit overwhelming. Choosing the right bed is an important part of making the right kind of environment for your child to feel comfortable and safe in, as well as it being a place to mess about in and play imaginary games.
