Kids Beds

Buying a bed for kids can be a bewildering experience initially because there is such a wide range of options and stores to choose from.  Kids beds really do come in all shapes, sizes, styles and colours, so making the right decision can take some time.  It is worth taking that time however, so that you and the kids are happy with a piece of furniture that is likely to be around for a long time, and indeed may be used by more than one little one.

Bedrooms have many functions for kids.  They are not simply a place to sleep, as they might be for adults, but a step along the way to the future, full of exciting possibilities as a den and play area, offering privacy when needed, and doubling up as peaceful place to do the homework.

Types of kids beds vary from simple wooden or metal beds, which can be a very reasonable option if the budget is tight, to divans, bunk beds, captain’s beds and cabin beds.  For that very special bed, which will never be forgotten, there are types of novelty beds that can range from a fire engine to a princess carriage.

In the end, when buying kids beds, you need to decide ultimately what will be best for the child and for the room space you have available.  There is not much point in buying an all-singing and dancing cabin bed with pull out drawers and desk if you do not have enough room for it.  However, cabin beds with a top bunk accessed by a ladder can also be compact and practical, yet still provide additional space for storage and for your child to create a secret den underneath the top bed.

If you are a little pushed for space in the home and need two children to sleep in the same room, you can consider twin beds or bunk beds.  In terms of saving space, bunk beds are ideal, and they provide a bit of extra excitement for the kid sleeping on the top bunk.  Make sure the safety rails are firm and be prepared for an argument as to who gets to sleep in the top bunk.  A child who gets up to go to the bathroom often every night is probably better off at the bottom.

An attractive option for kids beds is a captain’s bed, styled originally on the nautical design that was the staple for ship’s cabins where space was very much at a premium.  Though captain’s beds now come in all sorts of sizes, designs and materials, they are great for kids’ rooms as they have drawers built in underneath them for storage.  The number of drawers depends on the size and height of the bed.  Additionally, most captain’s beds have a pull-out guest bed, particularly handy for sleepovers and for when other guests are staying over and need something to sleep on.
